Who Is TheShy? The Story of Kang Seung-lok

If you follow the LPL even casually, you have heard the name. Kang Seung-lok — better known as TheShy — is widely regarded as the most mechanically gifted top laner in League of Legends history. This is the short version of how he got there.

Early years: the Riven prodigy

Born on November 11, 1999, in South Korea, Kang first made his name not on a pro stage but in solo queue, where his Riven play was so distinctive that a specific animation-canceling sequence became known as "The Shy Combo." He was associated with Team WE's organization as a streamer around 2014–2015, but his young age kept him off the LPL stage.

Invictus Gaming and the 2018 World Championship

TheShy joined Invictus Gaming in 2017, and a year later IG did what no LPL team had ever done: win the World Championship. At Worlds 2018, IG swept Fnatic 3–0 in the final, delivering China's first Summoner's Cup. TheShy's performances — above all his Aatrox in the semifinal against G2 Esports — became some of the most replayed moments in competitive League history.

He followed it with an LPL title and Finals MVP in spring 2019, and over his career has been named to the LPL All-Pro First Team six times.

Weibo Gaming and the 2023 run

After leaving IG in 2021, TheShy spent two seasons with Weibo Gaming. The stint peaked at Worlds 2023, where WBG made a surprise run all the way to the final before falling to T1 — a reminder that even in a "down" period, TheShy remained a championship-caliber player.

Return to IG, the break, and the 2026 comeback

TheShy rejoined Invictus Gaming in December 2024 and played the full 2025 season, reaching the Worlds 2025 play-in stage (a 1–3 loss to T1 in October 2025 was his last match before stepping away). In December 2025 IG announced he would take a break from competition.

Then, on June 15, 2026, IG announced his return to the active roster for LPL 2026 Split 3. His comeback match on July 25, 2026 — a 2–1 win over Weibo Gaming, his former team — was one of the most-watched LPL regular-season series of the year.
