Azeroth Survivors is a free, fan-made World of Warcraft roguelike by Aethus. The original runs in the browser at wow.aethus.pl; a Windows build and a from-source local build exist for people whose browser cannot run it. This page is an independent guide — we are not affiliated with Aethus or Blizzard Entertainment, and the game is not hosted here. The button above opens the original play page in a new tab.

What is Azeroth Survivors?

It is a survivors-style roguelike — the loop popularised by Vampire Survivors — set inside World of Warcraft 1.12.1. You pick a race, gender, class and zone, then survive: your abilities cast themselves, enemies swarm in waves, you level up and choose upgrades, and a boss arrives every couple of minutes. (project README)

The project is explicit about its legal position: a free fan game by Aethus, not affiliated with or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment, shipping no Blizzard game files. The screenshots and the game itself render art from a World of Warcraft client, which remains © Blizzard Entertainment. (project README, Legal)

Under the hood it is not a mod: it runs on a from-scratch WoW 1.12.1 client engine. The local build uses benilla (the client written in Rust) and wenilla (the same client compiled to WebAssembly), with Bevy as the renderer. The engine code is MIT / Apache-2.0; the game data is not in the repository. (project README, How it's built)

How to play Azeroth Survivors in the browser

  1. Open wow.aethus.pl in a current desktop browser. The game needs WebGPU, so use a recent Chrome, Edge or Safari. On Linux Chrome the site's own message points to chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu. (official page message)
  2. If the page says there is no WebGPU, turn on hardware acceleration (chrome://settings/system or edge://settings/system) and update the graphics driver. On a laptop with two GPUs, assign the dedicated GPU to the browser in Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics. chrome://gpu shows why WebGPU is off. (official page message)
  3. If the page says too many people are playing, the browser build is at capacity: retry later, join the project's Discord, or download the Windows build from the same page. (official page message)
  4. Make your pick. On the character screen, click a race, gender, class and zone — sixteen zones are available, from the starting zones to Naxxramas and the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj — then press Enter (or click Enter World) to start. The pick is remembered across reloads. (project README, CONTROLS.md)
  5. Play with one hand on WASD and the other on the wheel. You never aim or press an attack button: abilities fire on their own, and your decisions are movement plus level-up choices. (CONTROLS.md)

Controls

| Input | Action | | --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | W A S D / arrow keys | Move the hero | | Space | Jump | | F (from level 5) | Your class's movement spell — Blink, Charge, Sprint, Dash, Fade, Ghost Wolf, Aspect of the Cheetah, Blessing of Freedom, Howl of Terror — aimed at the cursor | | 1 / 2 / 3 (or click a card) | Pick a level-up upgrade | | C | Unlock / lock the camera; drag to swing and tilt it | | Mouse wheel | Zoom, from over the shoulder out to 70 yards | | G | Toggle the picture polish pass (?grade=0 starts it off) | | Esc | Pause / resume | | Enter | Start a run; from the game-over screen, play again |

Classes, zones and the level-up loop

Classes come from the client's own character creation. The pick screen uses the 1.12.1 glue art and offers the classes each race could actually be in that client, so a Night Elf cannot be a Shaman and an Orc cannot be a Paladin — the same restrictions the original game had. Sixteen zones are playable, and each fights with that zone's real creatures and bosses, taken from its spawns. (project README)

Level-up cards are the build system. Each card is coloured by WoW item quality — the colour tells you how strong the pick is — and the card lists exactly what changes, e.g. Damage 20 » 26 or Targets 2 » 3. Movement spells arrive at level 5. So a run's "build" is the combination of cards you accept, not a tier list someone else can hand you: read the deltas and take what your current spells multiply. (project README)

Camera matters more than it looks. The camera is locked top-down by default, which is the laptop-friendly mode; C unlocks it so you can see waves coming from behind. (CONTROLS.md)

Running it locally or offline

If your browser has no WebGPU, or the hosted page is full, the project ships a from-source build that runs on your own machine:

git clone https://github.com/OutThisLife/azeroth-survivors-re
cd azeroth-survivors-re
make build # fetch game data + install toolchain + build the wasm (~5.5 GB download)
make start # → open http://127.0.0.1:8090/

Prerequisites are Rust, make, curl, unzip and a bash shell; on Windows, run everything from Git Bash, because PowerShell and cmd cannot run the scripts. make build downloads the English WoW 1.12.1 client (build 5875) from archive.org and extracts its MPQs — that data stays out of the repository. (project README, Play it / game data)

This route is for personal use and still requires a World of Warcraft client download; it is not a copyright-free way to play.

Azeroth Survivors FAQ

Is Azeroth Survivors free? Yes. It is a free fan game by Aethus, and the play page documents no paid tier or purchase step. (project README, official page)

Do I need to download anything to play in the browser? No — the browser build runs from the play page. A Windows download exists on the same page for people who cannot or would rather not run it in a tab. (official page)

Why does my browser say it has no WebGPU? WebGPU is a modern browser graphics API, and the game needs it. Use a current Chrome, Edge or Safari, enable hardware acceleration, and update your graphics driver; the game's own page documents these steps. (official page message)

Why does the page say "too many people are playing"? The hosted browser build has a capacity limit, so the page asks you to retry, join the Discord, or use the Windows build. (official page message)

Is this an official Blizzard game? No. It is a free fan project by Aethus, not affiliated with or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment, and it ships no Blizzard game files. (project README, Legal)

Can I play it on a phone? The documented control scheme is keyboard and mouse — WASD to move, the mouse wheel to zoom — and the browser requirement is WebGPU. Treat a desktop or laptop as the supported path; the project does not document a touch control scheme. (CONTROLS.md)

What happens to my progress between runs? The project documents one thing clearly: your race, gender, class and zone picks are remembered across reloads. (project README) It does not publish details on how run progress or saves are stored, so treat anything you read about save files elsewhere as unconfirmed and check the project's Discord before relying on it.
